Using Music to Calm Your Dog

You may feel like you try everything to calm your dog when they're shaking under the table during a thunderstorm, but have you ever tried turning on your favorite Elton John or Bob Marley song for them?

Studies have shown that playing music for your dog can be an effective way to alleviate their stress. A recent study published in the journal of Physiology and Behavior indicated that playing music for dogs led to reduced signs of anxious behavior such as barking less, lying down more – and even lower levels of the stress hormone cortisol.

Just as we have certain music preferences, our four-legged friends also have theirs. Compared to other genres, Reggae and Soft Rock appeared to have the greatest calming effect on the dogs in this study.

Music can be a particularly useful tool when your fur buddy is exposed to unfamiliar loud noises, such as thunder or fireworks. Getting the tunes going can help drown out these noises and calm your dog down. You can create your own playlist for your pup or choose from a variety of playlists on Spotify® and Pandora® that have been created specifically for dogs. Our special “Soft Rock & Reggae for Dogs” playlist on Spotify® is a good place to start. If you have the option, play the music from a portable speaker or home sound system so it is loud enough to cover up any of the fear-inducing sounds from outside and your dog feels as safe as possible.

You might also consider giving your furry friend CBD products in conjunction with playing music to ensure they will stay relaxed during these moments. If you want to buy CBD for dogs, know that Kradle products contain CBD derived from American-grown hemp and work naturally with the canine endocannabinoid system to calm your dog from the inside out. Our Melts are a great solution for sudden stressful events — like when a thunderstorm comes up out of the blue. With more CBD in each serving than our other products, they’re also formulated to calm your furry friend quickly. Music paired alongside our Melts are the perfect combination to help your dog feel more relaxed when they hear foreign noises.

Of course, you don’t have to wait to turn up the tunes until your dog starts to hear loud noises. You can play soothing music for your dog when you’re at work or running an errand to keep them calm. Since every dog is different, Reggae and Soft Rock may not be the best genres to play for yours. Play around with different genres, mixing up the rhythm and tempo, to see which ones your furry friend reacts to most positively.

Instead of watching your dog tremble in fear under the table during the next storm, you can play their favorite tunes – while the two of you dance the stress away!
